SPACEY JANE STRAIGHTFACED

Before the covid-19 pandemic hit, Australian band Spacey Jane had one hell [the good kind] of a year ahead of them with an Australian tour and UK dates lined up at festivals The Great Escape, Live At Leeds, Dot To Dot and Hit The North. Not allowing current events to keep them down, the garage dreamy-poppers is pushing ahead with the release of their debut album, from which we’re currently enjoying the bouncy sounds of ‘Straightfaced’. Built of a guitar melody that would make Mystery Jets weep, singer Caleb Harper reels his tale of heartache in that texture indie-pop vocal reminiscent of Delcan McKenna. Much like the various lockdowns across the world that often feel like they have no end, ‘Straightfaced’ is all about prolonged emotional turmoil. As Harper shares: “Straightfaced” just prior to a breakup that lasted almost 6 months. “It was a powerful reference point for me throughout the months of heartache, a good consolidation of feelings amongst a wave of emotions.” Mark June 12th on your calendars as that’s when Spacey Jane’s Sunlight LP will be out and about, and we can’t wait already. - Hannah Thacker
